University of Miami Visit

Our sophomores and juniors truly enjoyed their rescheduled visit to the University of Miami on Wednesday, February 24th!  While our original plan included a trip to both Florida Atlantic University and University of Miami on January 27th, the unsettled weather patterns did not cooperate.  However, our hosts at UM were graciously willing to reschedule and this time the weather was beautiful!

Visiting college campuses is an invaluable part of the college search and application process so our trip included an introduction to the brand-new Admissions Office in the completely renovated University Center. Jeff from Fort Lauderdale, our Tour Guide, gave us an in-depth view of the campus facilities as well as student life on campus.  We saw a residence hall room – nice but a bit small – and peeked in to the gorgeous fitness center. Wednesday is Farmer’s Market day at UM so we were able to enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of the many different food and other vendors in the middle of campus as we walked through.

Near the end of the tour, we stopped at the “U” for a photo op and it’s easy to see that everyone was having fun!

Jeff then escorted us to the beautiful new Braman Miller Center for Jewish Student Life, the expanded Hillel.  After some refreshing lemonade and lunch, Robyn Fisher, Assistant Director of Hillel and Sammy, an active student leader, lead a tour of the building and also discussed the elements of Jewish student life at Miami.

This was certainly a fun and worthwhile experience, and we may just have a few future “Canes” among our Rosenblatt High School students!

Soggy Campus Visit to FAU

Our college field trip on January 27th to FAU and University of Miami did not exactly unfold as planned, but students found the first half of the trip to be beneficial. We arrived at FAU that morning in time to enjoy a personal information session in their beautiful Student Services building.  While the rain put a bit of a damper on our campus tour, we all tried to stay dry wearing our complementary FAU rain ponchos.

Our tour guides escorted us to a state of the art residence hall, and we traversed the main campus breezeway and learned about the various campus facilities and programs.  We finished our tour at the Sean Stein Pavilion in the College of Business where we had planned to board the bus and drive down to University of Miami for the second part of the day.

Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate with our plans - sending high winds, torrential rain and tornado warnings our way - so we waited at FAU until the weather had cleared enough for us to return to school.

Our students were outstanding despite the poor weather and the change in plans!
The trip to University of Miami will now be held on Wednesday, February 24th for all interested sophomores and juniors. Let's pray for sunshine!

College Counseling Update

The world of College Counseling is always active and exciting!  Our seniors have completed their
applications and are beginning to receive responses from their colleges.  Decisions will continue
to come in through the end of March and many seniors are busy with scholarship applications in addition to keeping their grades up, as expected by colleges and universities.

Juniors have begun the Mentor Group curriculum so that they are fully prepared for their own college process, starting with the Junior Survey self-assessment, and using Naviance Family Connection, our exceedingly valuable web-based college advising database and program. Additionally, all juniors and many sophomores participated in our college visit field trip on Wednesday, January 27th, scheduled for FAU and University of Miami  See the separate blog post for more details about that trip.

Standardized testing is still an important aspect of the college application process and we provided a full-length practice ACT for juniors and sophomores on Sunday, January 24th.  On February 25th, students and parents will learn how to compare these results with the results from the PSAT in order to choose the exam which offers the greatest opportunity for success.

Our freshmen are not left out of the activity!  Many parents of ninth grade students attended the College Counseling 101 introductory program on January 14th, and all freshmen will have a meeting scheduled in college counseling over the next few months.  Sophomores too will benefit from individual meeting in college counseling.

As always, if you have any questions about our four-year college counseling program, please contact Jackie Rockman at rockmanj@dkja.net!
